Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa.
Well, yes, 2017 really did turn out to be an unpredictable pitch to play on (and play hasn’t finished yet!). There was bounce, there was swing, there was pace, and there was spin.
The White House got new tenants and the world continues to duck under the bouncers being delivered.
The British elections turned in a surprise result, with the shuffled, bruised and under siege batting order now playing havoc with the European relationship.
The renowned efficiency of the German machine will be tested as the Chancellor searches for an opening partner on a fast spinning pitch.
And, the change of innings in Aotearoa New Zealand will, potentially, test our collective appetites for ‘change’. Unfortunately, a recent rash of misogynistic racists crawling out from underneath their respective rocks, has already tested our collective patience (again).
For BERL, well, we managed to play a straight bat for the year. And, at 60 not out, we celebrated our 60th milestone and also formally announced our accreditation as an Approved Living Wage employer.
And now, as we bid farewell to 2017, we look ahead to the new (and not so new) challenges in 2018. Defining more appropriate metrics for measuring economic performance continues to occupy our minds, as sustainability and equity become just as critical as productivity and profitability in determining our overall ora and wellbeing.
Consequently, it is important to acknowledge the many organisations, enterprises and individuals that together make up the New Zealand community. Some may not feature on the conventional scorecards of GDP and productivity, but that does not make them any less valuable. And one of the highlights of working for BERL is the opportunity and privilege to work with some of these organisations. Reflecting on our collective efforts, continues to remind us of the debt we owe to mine, yours, and our forebears and tīpuna. We strive to build on the legacy we have the responsibility to nurture.
As in past years, in lieu of delivering cards and gifts to clients, BERL chooses to recognise the ongoing efforts of community organisations that strive to make life just that little bit better for others. In particular, we have made a contribution to the Wellington City Mission and thank their workers for their ongoing, resolute and determined mahi.
On behalf of the BERL team, a warm mihi for the Festive Season to all our clients, friends, family, colleagues, and associates.
We wish all well for the New Year and hope you have the opportunity for some thoughtful reflection and inspiring kōrero, surrounded by loving whānau and family, trusted friends, hearty kai, and refreshing drink. And, of course, some good cricket (just watch those sandy beach pitches – they are notorious for unpredictable bounce!).
Travel safe and look after each other.
