The number of ongoing eOrder projects is growing in New Zealand with the announcement of two new projects this quarter.
Counties Manukau Expand Electronic Lab Orders Pilot at Middlemore
Counties Manukau Health are expanding their successful electronic hospital lab orders pilot to include HL7 lab order messages between Eclair and the Delphic LIS and the implementation of the Eclair Collection Management module.
Middlemore Hospital clinicians currently use Eclair to order in-patient routine lab tests where samples are collected by a phlebotomist. The introduction of HL7 lab orders means full order details will be sent directly to the Delphic LIS and once analysed, results will be sent via an HL7 message to the northern region’s Eclair CDR (TestSafe) for sign-off and acceptance – closing the test request and reporting loop electronically.
The implementation of an electronic ordering process for hospital lab tests aims to deliver further cost savings, as was experienced with the pilot, and a range of other benefits including a reduction in duplicate ordering.
Electronic Ordering of Hospital Radiology Tests for South Island
In late 2012, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) implemented electronic ordering of hospital radiology requests. South Island Alliance, recognising the value of this initiative, are now looking to leverage CDHB’s solution and experience to extend electronic ordering of hospital radiology requests to three other DHBs – Nelson Marlborough, West Coast and South Canterbury.
Using the Sysmex Eclair solution, radiology order details will be electronically captured, including the clinician responsible for signing off the report, the radiology procedure to be performed and other relevant clinical details. An HL7 order message is then sent to the Radiology Information System (RIS) to request the radiology procedure. Once completed, the radiology report will be sent back to Eclair for sign off. While Canterbury and West Coast DHBs already use the Eclair sign off module to electronically accept radiology reports, this functionality will be extended to Nelson Marlborough and South Canterbury DHB as part of this project.
The roll out of eOrders for radiology will mean four out of five DHBs in the South Island will utilise a single instance of Eclair eRadiology along with a single shared instance of the RIS.
