Equity: it’s at the heart of everything we do
We recently had the privilege of welcoming Dr Camara Jones to speak about how better health outcomes can be achieved for everyone by shining ‘the bright light of equity’.
Dr Jones is an American doctor whose work is focused on naming, measuring and addressing the impact of racism and inequity on health. Her thought-provoking discussion highlighted the importance of improving equity, a key part of our work programme, and of working together as one sector, one team: kotahi te tīma.
As we mentioned in our June issue, we are working with the sector to deliver the Government's priorities of:
- achieving equity
- child wellbeing
- mental health
- primary health care.
Achieving equity will help us make significant gains in these other priorities.

The Ministry sponsored Dr Jones to speak at the recent Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners’ Annual Conference before she visited our office. Dr Jones had worked in the Ministry’s Te Kete Hauora team in 1999 and many staff were grateful for the opportunity to catch-up.
