The New Zealand Health IT Cluster is an industry grouping of New Zealand-based software and solution developers, consultants, health policy makers, health funders, infrastructure companies, healthcare providers and academic institutions.
The purpose of the Bulletin is to summarise news and information which either involves, or is of interest to, the New Zealand Health IT Cluster.

Management – What is it?

Beware of management gurus with instant secrets to success. Is management an emotion or a discipline?

Many would argue, we teach it; therefore it must be a discipline.

Boston-based management consultant, David Maister, states "Managing is essentially an emotional skill, an interpersonal skill and a social skill." Maister claims that this has little to do with intelligence, but a lot to do with passion. "What a good manager does is to help people find their passion, as opposed to telling people what their passion should be." A business background and sound technical skills do not necessarily make a good manager. People, social and emotional skills also shape and influence those who through their position influence others. Understanding emotions should be part of--not apart from—management. How do you measure up?
